Recording and Editing your NAF with Digital Audio Software
Workshop Description
This workshop guide your through the Ins and Outs of recording and editing your flute with digital audio software. Learn how to make professional sounding recordings, edit your audio to use only the best parts, sculpt your sound with EQ and add reverb and delay to get that playing-in-a-canyon sound.

The workshop would cover the following topics (If you do not know some of the terms, then this workshop would definitely help you.)
  • Microphones for NAFs
  • Preamps and audio interfaces (the boxes that get the sound of your flute in to, and out of, your computer.)
  • Recording software, called Digital Audio Workstations (DAW). The workshop will use Ableton Live for this, but most DAW’s function the same way. (Garage Band does not, we will not cover it.)
  • How to record your flute
  • How to edit your flute: EQ, compression, gating, editing sound files and adjusting volume (Basically this is getting the flute to sound the way you want it to)
  • Reverb/Delay/Echo, what they are, how they work, different ways to set them up in recording software
  • Simple Looping, with Ableton Live
  • Simple drum track construction with Ableton Live
  • An introduction to software based musical instruments

Required gear (You must bring your own gear):
  1. An Audio Interface: like Focusrite Scarlett Solo, or higher, Audio Interface (All Scarletts come with a free version of Ableton Live Lite) $99.99
  2. Ableton Live Lite (Free with Scarlett), or higher version or you purchase the Intro Version of Live
  3. If you are using Ableton Lite or Intro you will need the free EQ plugin TDR Nova
  4. A dynamic mic like a Shure SM58 $99.99   -There are mics that are almost as good and a lot less money: GLS Audio Vocal Microphone ES-58-S $35.97
  5. Over the ear headphones (non wireless), for example Audio Technica ATH M20 $49. (Ear buds can not be used as they will leak sound to other students in the room.)
  6. A computer: Laptop suggested. Processor speed should be close to 2.5 GHZ, and 8 GB ram. Ableton Live will work on PC & Mac

Make sure you bring your power cords. We will have mic stands and cable for those who fly, but if you drive please bring your own. The basic set up, not including the computer, is
less than $200.

The workshop will not cover
  • Other software beyond Ableton Live. (Keep in mind: most DAWs work the same, but the look of the graphics will be different, and things might be called by a slightly different name.)
  • Creating musical backing tracks, this demands a knowledge of chords, chordal harmony and a basic proficiency on a piano keyboard.
  • Mastering (Leave this to a professional)
  • Notation software
  • Gear for performance
  • Tech Support
  • Speakers for your studio (maybe a brief overview.)
