Workshop Description
Take your NAF playing to the next level with the Whispering Winds Workshop with Native American Music Award winner Scott August. The Whispering Winds workshop will cover two popular aspects of NAF playing: Intermediate techniques and improvising duets on the Native American style flute.

The Intermediate NAF playing part of the workshop will cover:

  • Mastering special techniques including: chirps • vibrato • tonguing effects and all ornamentations. How to do them, when to use them, and how to make them faster and cleaner.
  • An exploration of the different scales that can be found on the NAF, including the full major scale • a modified major scale • the blues scale • a quasi “Celtic” scale • the “Arabian” scale • the major pentatonic scale (Pueblo/Anasazi flute scale).
  • Working with rhythm. Discover how simple rhythms can take your playing to the next level and add more excitement to your music.
  • Simple steps to take your playing to the next level and getting out of ruts.

The Improvising Duets part of the workshop will cover:

  • Direct imitation
  • Call and response
  • Carrying a melody between two flutes
  • Creating a Ground Bass
  • How to create harmonic movement between two flutes.
  • Playing duets with and without rhythm tracks and playing duets with backing tracks
  • Working with loops

This will be an intimate workshop, with no more than 15 participants. Space is Limited!

The Sage Inn Santa Fe: The Official Hotel for Ancestral Spirits

Sage InnThe 2015 Soaring Spirits workshop will be held at the Sage Inn Santa Fe, the official hotel for the Soaring Spirits workshop. The Sage Inn is close to the historic plaza and walking distance to many restaurants and shops and they have an hourly shuttle to the plaza. The Santa Fe Flute School is working with the Sage Inn to offer participants of the Ancestral Spirits workshop a special rate on lodging. Stay tuned for details.

About the instructor: Scott August

Multi-instrumentalist Scott August is a best selling composer/producer and Native American Music Award (NAMMY) winner. His music is regularly featured on the nationally syndicated radio shows "Hearts of Space" and "Echoes" and on the the digital networks XM, Sirius, DISH and DirecTV.

August's music has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Native American Music Award (NAMMY), an Indian Summer Music Award and Zone Music Reporter (ZMR) Award In 2009, his DVD, Ancient Light, was aired on the PBS network. In addition to his recordings August is the author of three books and a informative blog.

John Diliberto of Echoes radio says "August has always been a cut or two above most native flute players... He layers guitars, keyboards and all kinds of percussion into his compositions, moving from world fusion to airy ambiences." The Los Angeles Times has called his music "shimmering and luminous."
