Songs for the Journey: The Recordings

Songs for the Journey is a collection of songs, from The Complete Guide to the Native American Style Flute, 2nd Edition (page 106-121). Each new song adds a level complexity from the previous one as an aid for NAF players and students to build their technique. They have been recorded without any embellishments and, to aid those learning new rhythms, as close to the indicated tempo as possible. However, the player may change the tempo of a song and/or add embellishments to taste. (see Part 6: Embellishments for the NAF, page 85)

The Far Hills (Bonus Song) The Far Hills is based on a scale using the major 3rd and 6th of the NAF. Both of these notes are out of the normal pentatonic major scale of the NAF and give the tune its unique sound. The major 6th is part of the normal NAF TAB key signature of four sharps, the major 3rd is indicated with an accidental. PDF Download coming soon.
The Far Hills (NAF in G : 72 bpm)
Arabesque (Bonus Song) Written in the Phrygian dominant scale, some times called the Spanish gypsy scale, this song has the distinctive sound of the middle east. The Phrygian dominant scale mixes major and minor intervals and a minor 2nd above the root, and an augmented 2nd too. The song is presented here in two flavors: Solo and with hand percussion.

Lone Butte (Bonus Song) This song incorporates lots of opportunities for articulation and many embellishments: Turns (Rolls), Taps, Triplet divisions and Trills. The first theme is in pentatonic minor, while the second theme moves into a more dorian mode, with descending lines that stair-step in pairs of repeating notes. The song form is ABAB with development in the repeating sections.

Lone Butte is a rock outcrop south of Santa Fe, just off the Turquoise Trail.
Lone Butte (NAF in F# : quarter = 110 bpm)
Babou’s Bounce (Bonus Song) Named for the way one of Scott & Claire’s cats bounces off of walls, a la the Matix, this song is basically a blues tune that works it’s way through most of the notes of the NAF. Not for the faint of heart…
