Mesa Moonrise

by Mark Nixon

A student song for NAF available for download
Mark Nixon, one of Scott August's Skype students has progressed from learning beginning technique to composing, notating and recording his own songs for the Native American style flute. "Mesa Moonrise" is an excellent example of well crafted, simple tune, with a strong melody and a clear form.

Here's Mark's story about how Mesa Moonrise came to be:

"On the evening of Apr. 15, 2014 my wife and I were driving south from Cortez, CO to Gallup, NM, somewhere out in the middle of the Navajo Nation. We were witness to one of the most amazing full Moonrises I could ever imagine. I told my wife "I am going to write a flute song about this Moonrise. This is it"

Scott invited Mark to share Mesa Moonrise in the Student Notes section of the Santa Fe Flute School website. You can listen to Mark's recording and, if you would like to play the song yourself, download a printable PDF copy for free by filling out the form at the bottom of the page.

Here is Mark says about lessons with Scott August:

"I have been doing Skype lessons with Scott August for just a bit over a year now, and he is amazingly professional and patient. Considering this is my first venture into any form of music at all in my life, (I am 60 years old) I am quite proud of what Scott has helped me accomplish in this short time."
