Soaring Spirits: Songwriting for the NAF
Writing, Remembering and Recording Songs

Workshop Description
Experience the charm and enchantment of Santa Fe, New Mexico while mastering the art of songwriting for your Native American Style Flute. Native American Music Award winner Scott August will guide you through this multi-day songwriting workshop. Using easy to follow, step-by-step techniques, the Soaring Spirits workshop will show you how to turn your musical ideas into complete songs, and share them through notation/publication and recording.

This will be an intimate workshop, with no more than 15 participants, and will focus on the following:
  • Finding Your Songs: Easy techniques to improvise or compose short songs for the NAF
  • Dancing to Your Songs: A look at simple rhythms and how they can make your song move
  • Organizing Your Songs: Understanding how to give your songs shape and structure
  • Sharing Your Songs: An exploration at the different ways a songs can be notated (written down) for publication
  • Recording Your Songs: Each participant will get to record the song they create during the workshop and receive a copy to take with them
Bonus sessions will include Group Rhythm Playing and Group NAF Playing.

Sage InnThe Soaring Spirits workshop will be held at the Sage Inn Santa Fe, the official hotel for the Soaring Spirits workshop. The Sage Inn is close to the historic plaza and walking distance to many restaurants and shops and they have an hourly shuttle to the plaza. The Sage Inn is offering participants of the Soaring Spirits workshop a special rate on lodging.

Multi-instrumentalist Scott August is a best selling composer/producer and Native American Music Award (NAMMY) winner. His music is regularly featured on the nationally syndicated radio shows "Hearts of Space" and "Echoes" and on the the digital networks XM, Sirius, DISH and DirecTV.

August's music has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Native American Music Award (NAMMY), an Indian Summer Music Award and Zone Music Reporter (ZMR) Award In 2009, his DVD, Ancient Light, was aired on the PBS network. In addition to his recordings August is the author of three books and a informative blog.

John Diliberto of Echoes radio says "August has always been a cut or two above most native flute players... He layers guitars, keyboards and all kinds of percussion into his compositions, moving from world fusion to airy ambiences." The Los Angeles Times has called his music "shimmering and luminous."
